Wismettac Harro Food’s Installation of Channel Drainage and Speed Humps

The Client 

Wismettac Harro Foods Limited is an imported food supermarket based in Surrey, supplying a wide range of specialist international products. The site required improvements to its external infrastructure to ensure effective surface water management and safer vehicle movement. They engaged our team to provide specialist support with the installation of channel drainage across key access areas, alongside the addition of speed humps to improve traffic control and on-site safety for staff and visitors.

The Solution

• Within a designated area, our team excavated a section measuring up to 22 metres through the existing reinforced concrete slab, carefully managing the works to minimise disruption to site operations.

• Once excavation was complete, we installed a reinforced concrete base within the trench. This was essential to provide sufficient load-bearing strength to accommodate the heavy vehicle weight class regularly using the area.

• On top of the newly formed concrete base, we installed 22 metres of S150-rated ACO channel drainage, complete with two integrated sumps to ensure efficient surface water capture and controlled drainage flow.

• Concrete expansion joints were installed between the new works and the existing concrete slab, allowing for thermal movement and preventing future cracking or structural stress at the interface points.

• The ACO drainage system was then fully surrounded in concrete and protected with a damp-proof membrane (DPM). This reinforcement extended approximately 0.2 metres on either side of the excavation, up to the expansion joints, to ensure long-term durability and water resistance.

• In a separate designated area, we installed two concrete speed cushions measuring 1.9m x 1.9m, designed to effectively limit vehicle speeds to 5mph and improve overall site safety.

• Due to the operational nature of the site, the speed cushion installation was completed in two phases. This phased approach ensured continuous access for vehicles entering and exiting the premises throughout the works.

• As a final step, we reinstated the surrounding surfaces, restoring the area to a clean, safe, and presentable condition, ready for immediate use with minimal visual impact.

The Outcome

The client has reported that the recently installed speed humps and channel drainage, completed by Express Drainage Solutions, have been performing exceptionally well, with no reported issues. The speed cushions have successfully reduced vehicle speeds in the designated areas, ensuring safer movement of food transportation lorries and enhancing overall site safety for staff and visitors.

Additionally, the new channel drainage system has proven highly effective in managing surface water, preventing pooling and potential slip hazards. Water is now efficiently diverted away from operational areas, protecting the concrete surfaces and surrounding infrastructure from damage. The client has expressed satisfaction with the quality and durability of the installation, noting that both the traffic-calming and drainage solutions have contributed to smoother, safer day-to-day operations across their site.
