18 WAYS TO REDUCE YOUR WATER USAGE
Not only will reducing your family’s water usage leave you with extra cash for holidays, home improvements, and savings – it can also make a huge positive contribution to our environment. The world’s population is increasing at a concerning rate, and this puts strain on all natural resources, including water. There’s good news, though, as everyone can help to relieve this burden.
It’s easy to conserve water at home when you know how – so take a look at the following top tips to reduce water usage in your home.
TOILETS
- Without a doubt, toilet flushing is a big consumer of household water. Therefore, avoid flushing unnecessarily or flushing anything but toilet waste and paper.
- Place a plastic bottle filled with water into the tank of the toilet – this weight will reduce the water needed to fill the tank each time you flush.
- Investing in a low flow toilet is an environmentally-friendly investment that can reap rewards over time, and is designed to conserve with each flush.
TAPS
- Don’t waste water when brushing your teeth – only turn on the tap when it’s time to rinse, and don’t leave it running for the duration.
- Take note of any leaky taps and have them fixed as soon as possible.
SHOWERS
- While you wait for the running shower water to heat up, collect the colder water in a bucket – this can be used for other purposes, such as flushing a toilet or watering plants.
- Choose a more efficient shower head – examples include aerating heads, low flow heads and flow regulators.
- Do you take long leisurely showers? This habit could be sending gallons of wasted water down the drain every time. Instead, strive to have shorter, more efficient showers. Why no challenge yourself and time yourself while showering?
WASHING MACHINES
- Older washing machines could be consuming significant (and costly) amounts of water. Investing in a newer, more energy-efficient model will bring you the same results using less water.
- Investigate whether it’s a possibility to use the greywater from your washing machine for other purposes. Greywater is any waste water generated from a home or building (not including toilet water) – when treated, it can be reused for non-potable uses.
DISHWASHERS
- Be patient and wait until the dishwasher is completely full before turning it on.
- Invest in a newer, more energy-efficient model – you could save yourself litres of water with every wash. If your dishwasher has an economy option, use this – it may take longer but you can put it on while you’re out or asleep.
- When hand-washing pots and pans, make sure you only turn on the tap when you’re ready to rinse.
COOKING
- Instead of dumping water down the drain at the end of every cooking session, instead save this water. When it cools, it can be used for other uses e.g. watering plants.
OUTSIDE
- If your lawn is becoming too much to handle, why not consider scrapping it completely? Decking, patios and rockeries are all stunning alternatives to lawn grass – but if you don’t want to lose the green completely, there are synthetic alternatives available which look like the real deal.
- Set up a rain barrel or water butt to collect rainwater – something we get plenty of in the UK! This superb natural resource is perfect for watering outdoor and indoor plants, and washing patios.
- Water plants in the morning when the temperature is lower. This way, you avoid all that precious water evaporating.
DRAINAGE SYSTEM
- Keep a close eye on your water bill – spiking numbers can be indicative of a leak. Should a leak be suspected, a drainage expert should be called out to pinpoint, diagnose and fix the issue.
